The
new EP from Bohémien is extremely good! It is no-pretension, keyboard
and bass driven Italian gothic rock - you could say Christian Death set
the standard for the Italian goth sound, so the temperment here won't surprise
anyone, but the fervor they put into this EP is delectible. There are 3
mixes of 'Anemia', making it almost a single. Each edition seems to better
the next in different respects. They execute perfect tempo, pitch, and variety.
Mercurial verses are followed by eloquent chorus - or vice versa; their
songwriting is sincere and direct. The lyricas are in their native italian,
that establishes, at least to the non-latin ear, an exotic and distant origin
which i tend to appreciate.
The
bass is clear and regnant, which is a symptom of keen, oldschool goth style.
The guitars often function as an escort with an emotional burst of sound,
which is an even more important aesthetic to that certain attitude. They
keys also support the ryhtm with equally distinct atmospheres. The third
mix of 'Anemia' is heavier in the keyboard/electronic side with a prominenet
electro beat and a more ghostly vocal following, which they have pulled
off extemely well, maintaining a goth sound, giving the version a more modern
edge. At the same time it makes it an even harsher, darker sound with the
phasing guitar reverberations. This EP of brand new output from one of Italy's
finest gothic rock bands ends too soon, solely because they leave me hungry
for more! I hope this is the prelude to more activity from Bohémien,
namely a new full length soon, made up of completely fresh material.
